The pivotal role specialised neuro-respiratory physiotherapists play in people living with MND
Do you and your team support participants living with motor neurone disease (MND)?
There is an exciting and groundbreaking clinical trial currently running in Victoria for people living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) that we’d like to share.
The pivotal role specialised neuro-respiratory physiotherapists play in people living with MND
Neuro-respiratory physiotherapists play a vital role in early-stage motor neurone disease (MND), helping to maintain mobility, manage breathing issues, and prevent complications. Early intervention supports independence, reduces hospital admissions, and improves quality of life. Active Edge Physio provides specialised care, including tailored exercise programs, airway clearance techniques, carer training and equipment advice.
Referring to physiotherapy early is crucial for a person’s long-term well being.

A 10 week long study run by Dr Nicole Sheers looking at the effectiveness of breathing exercises in early stage MND.
Eligibility criteria:
- Breathing capacity (FVC) less than 50%
- Aged between 18-90 years old
- Confirmed or probably MND diagnosis
- Not using a ventilator or breathing machine
- Have not tried lung volume recruitment or expiratory muscle training before
If you are unsure if your participant meets the eligibility criteria above, we are happy to help with a comprehensive assessment and management plan with a respiratory focus.
